The new high performance Union Elementary School for the Town of Union, Connecticut officially opened on August 30, 2010.  The 100-student, 20,000 SF, K-8 school is the first sustainable facility for this small Connecticut community.

Located on the original school property, the $6.5 million dollar project includes significant site improvements benefiting both the student population and Union's citizens.  These amenities include a new campus entry, a bus loop, parking, and accessibility to the athletic fields and playgrounds.

Sustainable building design features include a highly efficient building envelope, natural day lighting, designed acoustics, displacement ventilation, occupancy sensors, heat recovery, and DDC system controls.  The ventilation system provides 100% outdoor air to the occupants with great energy efficiency and within a uniquely designed classroom environment.

The building focuses on two classroom wings that integrate the trademarked Advantage ClassroomTM design of the full service A/E firm, Turner Group Design-CT, LLC, a division of The H.L. Turner Group Inc.  In addition, the students and faculty will enjoy a multi-purpose room with planned future expansion capabilities, as well as centrally-located library, music, art, science, and support spaces.

The project will be awarded with an approximately $8,000 grant from the Capital Improvements Program for its healthy and environmentally responsible design features.  The Turner Group has completed over 80 school projects throughout New England
